With technology constantly evolving, it’s no longer necessary to physically be at work to be a productive member of the team. Technologies like Skype, Facetime and cloud computing are just a few ways employers can keep their employees at home. This may increase job satisfaction while also saving the company money in overhead
expenses.

But not all work at home jobs involve first working for a larger company. Many people serve as freelancers, choosing to form their own businesses and work as contractors. If you’re looking to work from home, you may want to consider these options.

Virtual Assistant
Think of a virtual assistant as an off-site secretary. A traditional secretary comes with many expenses to a company, and if the company is small, they may not need a full-time secretary until the company grows. Virtual assistants work from home, often communicating with the boss via chat, Skype or another real time service. They can do most of what a traditional administrative assistant does, but at a lower cost.

Translators
International companies need translators all the time. They may translate files and documents, and transcribe and translate conversations and conference calls. People who speak uncommon languages are even more in demand, and these home-based jobs are plentiful. The median salary is approximately $21 per hour, with much higher wages paid by large corporations.

Call Center Representatives
If you’ve seen those Capital One credit card commercials with “Peggy,” the less-than-hospitable call center representative, you may understand why some companies are trying to find more call center workers from America. Some customers have trouble communicating with offshore call center representatives who speak English as a second language.

However, there are companies that don’t want to pay the large expenses associated with U.S. call centers. Instead, they hire work-from-home representatives to get an “American voice” and save on costs such as workspace and equipment. The pay is often by the minute, so don’t expect to get a big paycheck while you surf the Internet. If you like customer service, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Get The All NEW iPad FREE!

Writer/Editor
If you thought journalism was dead, then browse the Internet. Traditional newspapers are under pressure, but the online media business is booming and the Internet needs more writers with talent. Like all businesses, be prepared to climb the career ladder. At first, you may have to work for less than you think you deserve, but eventually you could command a much higher wage as your skill and notoriety increases.

Avoid the Scams
For every legitimate work-from-home job, there are 57 scams, according to a study conducted by The Rat Race Rebellion. Anybody looking to earn a living without leaving their home has to be very careful. First, do some research to make sure that the company is established. If you can’t find evidence that the company has a physical address and sells a product or service, then it’s best to avoid it.

Next, there should be an application and probably an interview process. Anybody who is legitimately looking to hire an employee wants to know that the job will be done at a superior level. Lastly, you shouldn’t have to pay anything. If a work-from-home job requires an investment, then it’s probably a scam.

The Bottom Line
If you have the discipline to work from home, then there are a lot of opportunities for you. However, earning a full-time wage by working from home will still take hours of uninterrupted hard work. You may still need to hire a babysitter. As any home-based employee will tell you, it’s not easier to work from home, it’s just a different location.

Work from home jobs for women are available in a variety of places on the internet. There are several inexpensive opportunities, and some are even free, that can be worked on part-time or full-time. Many of the options can be tailored for the individual’s needs, depending on the schedule, budget and preferences of the persons involved. The female applicant should first make a self-assessment to determine which will be the best industries to enter. She can begin by browsing through different online marketplaces and categories, and then compile a list of the top three groups which are of the most interest. Write down some of the most notable products and services offered. Start strategizing on the marketing approach, and how to stand out from others in the same industry. These jobs can be very easy and convenient, especially if the person already has a personal interest and sufficient knowledge in the beginning.

Some of the best work from home jobs for women includes buying and selling items online, auctioning old items from the garage or attic, cooking, baking, catering, gardening, landscaping, interior design, graphic design, content writing, website design, programming, art and clothes making. Women can also do a lot of other things that people might have associated as a man’s job for a long time. There are free online places and websites where women can get paid every day, week or month. Some have successfully earned thousands each week and quit regular employment for good. Read more books about the business, and look for other female mentors who can guide you through the entire process. Many successful females online will be willing to share their secrets so that you too, can become financially independent.

This might also be the best time to switch the mindset from that of ”job” to that of ”online entrepreneur” and ”be your own boss.” Work from home jobs for women don’t always bring the most satisfaction as far as feeling great about personal accomplishment, and also in the financial area. Jobs usually pay a person for the work they do today, but rarely a residual income on that original work. Jobs usually pay the worker the wholesale price, and ”the boss” collects the retail price. The person doing most of the work is not getting paid what they really are worth. This is where becoming ones own boss comes into play. Women, especially, benefit greatly from having their own businesses, especially an internet, network marketing business, where there is no ”glass ceiling,” and no gender discrimination. Network marketing also provides the potential to earn lifetime residual income, which has been proven to be the best pathway to financial freedom.

Life has been hard for single mother of seven Anne Katherine, but help has come from an unlikely source.

Entrepreneur Macleo Wong, 32, has offered to teach Anne, 34, to make soap, organic lip balm and other natural skincare products from home.

“I will be teaching her the techniques to make these products which she will then supply to me to sell in my natural skincare shop.

“She will be able to earn around RM500 monthly and the best part is that she can work from home without having to worry,” he said at Anne’s Tanjong Tokong flat recently.

Anne said she was glad for the opportunity to become self-reliant.

“I can now make some income while being at home with my kids.

“I have been taking care of my seven children, aged between three and 15, since 2009 after my husband left us,” she said, adding that she also bakes cookies.

Her situation became worse in August when one of her sons, aged 11, was diagnosed with scoliosis, an abnormal bone growth on his right chest region.

Anne said she received a monthly aid of RM450 from the state Welfare Department.

“My children have just started school and a lot of money goes to school essentials, including transportation costs, so money is never enough.”

State Youth, Sports and Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, who was present, said she managed to get three female business owners to help pay Anne’s rent for the year.

Anne also hopes to complete her law degree someday.

“I’ve already sat for my A-Levels’ Law paper.”

The FBI in Honolulu is warning the public about a work-from-home scam that involves victims receiving counterfeit checks.

The FBI said Tuesday there has been a recent uptick in complaints about a scam where someone who responds to a work-from-home ad is instructed to deposit a check and wire a portion to accounts controlled by defrauders.

Looking for Great Deals?

The intention is for the wire transfer to go through before the bank notifies the victim the check is worthless.

In one instance, a Kauai woman refused to send the wire transfer and received a threatening email claiming to be from an actual agent in Honolulu. The email included a photo of the special agent. She contacted the FBI, who confirmed the email was a fake.

The FBI believes these scams originate from Nigeria.

Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistant jobs have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many small businesses and corporations are beginning to see the benefits of hiring work from home professionals to handle the day-to-day operations of their businesses. They can save money on taxes, eliminate the need for insurance costs, and focus on the money-making aspect of their business model by hiring a remote virtual assistant. Virtual assistants handle e-mail correspondence, phone calls, spreadsheets, payroll, marketing materials, faxing, and many other duties. In many cases, they act as the “face” of the company and its correspondence with clients, customers, and vendors. Anyone with experience in an office as an accountant, receptionist, or payroll specialist can find gainful employment as a virtual assistant. Many reputable companies are hiring and there are many websites devoted exclusively to virtual assistant professionals. Some of these sites even offer certification opportunities to help you get noticed.

Customer Service
Similar to virtual assistant positions, work from home customer service positions are popping up left and right. Fortune500 companies and traditional brick-and-mortar establishments are realizing the cost-saving benefits associated with eliminating their call centers and offices and hiring home-based professionals to interface with their customers. Home-based customer service agents correspond with customers via e-mail, chat platforms, and on the phone. They may handle everything from technical issues to billing, sales, retention services, and customer account issues. Most customer service agents handle inbound calls, but some place outbound calls through designated company software or automated-diallers. The calls are routed automatically and the proper software necessary to do the job is installed on the computer of the home-based worker. Many of these companies require their workers to have proficient operating systems, high-speed internet, and a headset of excellent quality. Other companies provide these services for their contractors or employees.

Online Auction Selling
For those that enjoy interacting with customers and having complete control over their business, online auction selling may be the perfect work from home career. Business owners can sell virtually anything on these online auction sites. Some choose to sell used goods or rare items, while others focus on selling the newest and hottest electronics or designer handbags. A great way to get started is to buy a few items, experience the bidding-style process associated with these sites, and then sell off unwanted items from your own home. Thousands of dollars in start-up costs can be generated by selling unwanted jewellery, children’s clothing, designer handbags, brand name tools, and electronics. A keyword-rich auction title is the key to gaining maximum exposure and bids. A free internet marketing course can teach you how to develop titles for your auctions, which will result in large profits.

Drop Shipping
Drop shipping is a popular alternative to carrying inventory and merchandise to sell on online auction sites. Drop shippers generally carry a wide range of electronics such as digital cameras, cell phones, desktop and laptop computers, and popular gaming devices and systems. Drop shippers eliminate the hassle associated with carrying and managing inventory, breaking them down, taking detailed pictures, and shipping the items to customers. For a small fee, a legitimate drop shipper will provide you with the item specifics, unlimited use of stock photos, and ship the items directly to your customers on your behalf. Some drop shippers even handle the processing of payments for you, as well. If you don’t mind putting your reputation on the line and allowing a third party to handle your business affairs, drop shipping is the way to go. You are ultimately responsible for maintaining communication with your customers to ensure their satisfaction.

Mystery Shopping Jobs
Mystery shopping jobs are one of the most fun work from home jobs available. Imagine being paid to shop, dine at your favourite restaurants, or try new products or services. Similar to online survey companies, mystery shopping jobs are offered by sponsoring companies. These retail facilities need detailed feedback on customer’s experiences in their establishments to ensure that employees are complying with operating procedures and following protocol. They hire mystery shoppers to interact with sales staff and employees in a variety of ways. The mystery shopper is responsible for discreetly timing, taking notes on, and providing the company with a detailed recount of their experience. In exchange for their time, the mystery shopper is often rewarded with cash, gift cards, reimbursement of their purchase, or other forms of compensation. Although some perform mystery shopping assignments full-time, most perform “shops,” as they are often called, for supplemental income.

It’s Never Too Late To Start A Work From Home Career
There has never been a better time to attain a work from home job or opportunity. More companies are jumping on board and outsourcing part, or all, of their business operations to home-based professionals. It is a win-win situation for both parties. The home-based worker enjoys the freedom to work from the comfort of their own home or home office and the business eliminates the costs associated with maintaining expensive offices and equipment. They also receive huge tax breaks and eliminate the high costs of liability insurance by outsourcing their work to home-based employees or contractors.

Imagine being able to avoid the rising costs associated with fuel, child care services, meals on-the-run, toll and parking expenses, and expensive work wardrobes. Food, clothing, and fuel are among three of the most inflated items, these days. Their costs continue to soar, while brick-and-mortar establishments struggle to offer their employees more money to keep up with the inflation. Working from home eliminates the stress and hassle of most of these costs. In addition, being able to work from home allows you to be accessible to your family. Most work from home jobs can be catered to your schedule, which means you’ll never have to worry about taking time off of work in the case of a sick child or an emergency. You simply close your computer and come back to your work when you have the time. Although working from home is liberating, it is important to schedule regular shifts and breaks to maintain momentum and maximize your earnings.

Mom has evolved. For a time, there was only one type of Mom. She raised the kids and cared for the house and had dinner on the table when Dad came home from work. World War II showed us that Mom, like Rosie the Riveter, could work outside of the home and help keep our country’s economy going strong.

When the men came marching home, some Moms went back home as well, but some stayed in the work force. Now there were two types of Mom, the “stay-at-home” and the “working.”

This created a dilemma for Mom. Should she stay home and give up her outside identity (and the accompanying paycheck), or stay at work and give up precious time with her children? There was no right or wrong answer, but there was plenty of wondering about the path not taken.

And then along came the Internet.

For the first time, Mom could stay home with her children and reach out to life beyond her kitchen window at the same time. She could finally have it all, all at the same time! Working as a transcriptionist, or a graphic artist, or running her own online business (not to mention trying her hand as a writer), Mom could set her own hours, work as much as she wanted, have online conversations with co-workers who were, for the most part, adults, and still be at the second-grade holiday party from 1:00-3:00.

Grocery shopping could be done at 10:00 a.m. when the stores are practically empty! And forget trying to hit the post office at lunchtime; go in the middle of the afternoon when the lines are so much shorter.

Ok, the post office run will take forever, no matter how long or short the lines are. Why is it that the minute you enter the post office, life slows down to a crawl…? That trip will take an hour whenever you go.

Except for that trip to the post office, however, the Internet has given Mom the flexibility to do it all. And she’s gonna need it.

Both stay-at-home Moms and working-outside-the-home Moms have an easier time of compartmentalizing their lives. Working-outside-the-home Mom (ok, ok, enough political correctness; for purposes of this article, she just became “working” Mom) escapes the stress of screaming children by closing the door behind her, taking a deep breath of fresh air, and shuffling off to work.

Stay-at-home Mom’s compartments are a bit shorter: Before Nap, After Nap, After Dinner and, a personal favorite, Bedtime.

Once her children are older, there’s Kids are at School, After School, After Dinner, and, of course, Bedtime, which now means she gets to go to bed and let the teenagers finish their due-tomorrow term papers on their own. Yes, it’s still a personal favorite time of day.

But for work-from-home Mom, the compartments are not easily defined. No longer can she de-stress, or more appropriately re-stress, during those commutes to and from work. Is Kids-Are-At-School time better utilized by hitting the grocery store, or finishing that work assignment? No matter which she chooses, the other will have to be done eventually. “Eventually” isn’t the right word. If the assignment is not done on time, the boss will complain. If there’s no food, the children will complain. And if the milk runs out with two hours remaining on the work deadline, well, that’s when that flexibility comes in handy.

One work-from-home Mom recently sent this note to her supervisor, who is located halfway across the country from Mom:

“I figured out why it’s easier to work during the week. I sat down to finish this today (Saturday) and was informed intermittently that three people need rides, there is a wet spot on the couch, my daughter has to register for next year’s high school classes this morning, and there are no clean forks. No one mentioned that there are no clean towels, either, but I’m sure I’ll hear that one soon.”

When a person decides that they want to start a home business, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the offers that are put before you. There are so many different sales pitches and business angles that you are not sure what is for real and what is a scam. It can become so burdensome that many people give up on the idea of starting a home business altogether.

You do not have to give up on your dream of starting a home business. All you have to do is learn how to evaluate the offers that are presented to you. Once you learn how to distinguish the good from the bad, the real from the scam, you will be able to select the type of home business that best suits your personality and lifestyle.

Examine the offer letter and website of the company that is pitching a product or service to you as a home based business. While this may seem like an automatic thing, many people do not take the time to research the company or business any further than the sales letter.

Look at their website. Does it contain the following?

Spelling or grammatical errors. This may be a sign that it was created by a foreign company and is not a legitimate site. Grammatical errors also suggest deception as many scammers use this technique to have you believe you read one thing when it really was something else.

Full contact information including a physical street address. Make sure that you map the address to make sure it is a real building and not a vacant lot.

Phone numbers where you can call customer service and the corporate office? Websites that only have email contact information should be avoided.

Are the links in the site good or are they broken? Broken links signify that the company does not properly maintain their site. This should be a reflection of their product or service.

This same information applies to any written sales materials that they provide you. A company does not want to hide its identity or distribute marketing materials that make them look bad if they are legitimate.

Research the business model. When you are considering entering into a home based business that was originally created by someone else, you need to verify that their business model works. Does their plan have short term and long term goals and plans? Does their business model account for slow periods or other problems that may occur. If their business plan is simply to sell you a marketing kit filled with brochures and samples, you may wish to think again.

Take the time and do an Internet search on the business model of the company and see what others have to say. Read reviews by others who have invested into the company that is not directly connected to you by family or friendship. Look to see if there are positive or negative reports about them with various business agencies. A few minutes of research are well worth the effort.

Make sure that you are passionate about the product, service or business type. Many people make a quick decision about working from home because they are desperate for this type of employment. People also make business decisions based on what family and friends tell them is the best decision, or because they are already involved in the business.

A person will not find success in a home based business unless they are truly passionate about the business. You must love what you sell or you will never be able to convince someone else to make a purchase.

If your business plan passes all three of these steps, you are on your way to a very successful and happy career. Never jump into a home based business without evaluating it carefully, you will be happy that you took the time.

Legitimate work from home jobs seem to be very difficult to find. Many times these online jobs are not get-rich-quick companies. Positive things to look for are whether or not the online company stands behind its opportunities and does it offer plenty of online training in order to succeed.

One thing I find important in finding these jobs is online data entry work that doesn’t include having to speak with clients. I look for an online company that simply includes a need for a computer, keyboard, mouse and an internet connection. If a person has ambition, can follow directions and doesn’t quit, I believe that actual online data entry work should be within reach.

These online jobs include:

Traditional Data-Entry Jobs
Word Processing
Data Research
And many more data entry opportunities

These jobs should offer to its team members a guarantee for its program and offer complete support through the process.

Things to check for are:

Does the company offer plenty of online training? In order to succeed we need adequate training to perform our jobs to the best of our ability.

Is there an email address available for any questions we may have while going through the online jobs training information? Chances are we may have questions that need answers before moving further along through our online training program.

Does the company offer a money back guarantee if we are not satisfied? It is good to look for a 30 to 60 day money back guarantee if we are not satisfied.

Is the opportunity presented as a get-rich-quick company? If so, this may not be one of the legitimate work from home jobs.

Many of us are tired of long commutes to work. The price of gas to fill up our cars, as well as, wear and tear on our vehicles takes away from the income we are bringing home from our jobs.

The search to find actual work from home jobs can be long and exhausting. Things that make the search worthwhile for many of us is the thought of being able to perform our data entry jobs in the comfort of our own home. Other reasons include: not having to report to a boss, not having to spend extra money on nice work clothes and working hours that are best for our busy lives. Many of these jobs offer flexible work hours to work around appointments we may have, caring for children among other important day-to-day tasks.

Many job hunters may automatically assume any job posting with the phrase “work-from-home” is a scam, but each year more and more legitimate telecommuting positions pop up. The trick is just to know how to spot them.

Between 2007 to 2010, there was a 400% increase in the number of telecommuting jobs posted to FlexJobs, a job search Web site that aggregates work-from-home positions as well as positions with flexible hours. According to Sara Sutton Fell, the site’s founder, much of this was due to companies looking for ways to cut costs during the recession. As a result, many industries that traditionally had fewer telecommuting opportunities began to take advantage of new technology to make it work.

“When we first started the site a little over five years ago, it was mostly call center work, writing jobs, computer positions and IT,” Fell says. “Whereas now, medical and health account for the biggest proportion of jobs, followed by education.” Even though the economy has begun to improve, Fell expects that cost-saving pressures and environmental concerns to keep increasing the number of telecommuting opportunities.

For job hunters, it’s important to keep in mind that these positions tend to be ultra-competitive and generally pay less (as much as 5% to 15% less than comparable jobs in an office setting, Fell estimates). And then, of course, you have to beware of the scams. In particular, Fell suggests watching out for job postings that ask for money or sensitive information such as your Social Security number, not to mention postings written in all capital letters or including lots of exclamation points and dollar signs. If it doesn’t look like a professional posting, there’s a good chance it’s not.

Once you filter out the obvious scam posts, you can find plenty of telecommuting options you might never have thought existed. Here are seven of the more unusual telecommuting jobs listed on FlexJobs:

Physical therapist
It might sound surprising a physical therapist could work from home — unless of course that home is the patient’s. But that’s exactly what Christiana Care, an East Coast health care provider, is advertising on FlexJobs. This positionallows the health care professional to create and assess training routines for the patient from their home computer in addition to making the occasional visit to the patient.

Indeed, the same company is advertising other positions on the site for physical therapists and even registered nurses. Humana(HUM) and UnitedHealth Group(UNH) — Fortune 500 companies — have telecommuting postings for nursing positions as well.

Pharmacist
Along the same lines, there are multiple job opportunities for work-from-home pharmacists at nationwide companies such as Humana and LifePoint Hospitals(LPNT) . Obviously, these positions aren’t focused on interacting with customers so much as developing strategies and working on research for pharmaceutical treatments. Humana is looking for an oncology pharmacist to study clinical treatments, while LifePoint is looking for a remote order pharmacist who can analyze the patient’s health profile to make recommendations about their treatment. Continued…

Social worker
Social work isn’t exactly your typical office job to begin with, as workers often have to go out and consult with people in need, but some companies don’t require social workers to come into the office at all. OptumHealth, a part of the UnitedHealth Group, has a position for a full-time social worker who consults with patients and their families to help find the proper medical care, insurance options and community programs. While it is listed as a telecommuting job, this position does require you to live in the Seattle area, presumably so you can meet with families and medical personnel in person if need be.

Executive assistant
Not all executive assistants have to work in an office. FlexJobs has several postings for full- and part-time assistants who can telecommute.

For example, the Research and Innovative Technology Division, a branch of the Department of Transportation, is looking for an executive assistant who coordinates surveys, prepares travel advisories and coordinates with high-level officials by phone and email. The position itself is based in Washington, D.C., but telecommuting is an option. Oh and did we mention the salary starts at more than $60,000 a year?

Team manager
You don’t necessarily need to be in the office to manage a team anymore. General Electric has a posting for a consumer service manager who is responsible for managing a team of appliance repair technicians in Maryland and Washington, D.C. While the company is looking for someone who lives near that area, much of the job is expected to be handled out of a home office.

Food safety inspector
Science Certification Systems, an independent group that certifies company claims about everything from food safety to sustainability, is looking for a food safety auditor to vet food safety claims. This is a contract telecommuting position, though it does require traveling the country to carry out inspections.

High school adviser
So much for visiting the guidance counselor’s office. K12.com, an online education program, has an opening for a high school adviser responsible for reaching out to students by phone and email and planning online orientation sessions, among other tasks. It’s a part-time job and one that can be done almost entirely from home.

Goodman says you have to take as much care of what’s in your fridge (in the land of self-reliance, don’t waste food!) as what’s on your resume. And if you’re not quite ready to flee the office, then make the most of the years before you take the plunge-for a start, get to work half an hour early and scare the pants off your sleepier colleagues.

If inspiration and ideas are your thing, then Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho’s book Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business outlines what it takes to make a living wage doing art, design, writing, animation and other non-rote work. Their ‘nine qualities of a freelancer’ include loving what you’re doing, being a good communicator, and letting go of criticism.

To succeed out of the mainstream, however, you’re going to need to be your own best advocate. So if you’re worried about a charisma deficiency, you could always take heed of “The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism“-author Olivia Fox Cabane was lecturing at the United Nations at the tender age of 25, so she knows a bit about chutzpah. The bad news? She quotes an MIT study that suggests all we have is two seconds to make a first impression.

If all that’s too scary, how about having your cake and eating it, too? David Lindahl in “The Six-Figure Second Income” says you can make great money beyond your main gig (erm, what are you waiting for?), and you can do so by thinking small-being a ‘micromanufacturer and micromarketer’ is the way to go says Lindahl.

Eric Reis takes a scientific approach to entrepreneurship in “The Lean Startup,” arguing that to create a successful business, you have to be constantly look at what you’re doing, appraise it honestly, and nimbly react to your successes and failures.

But you won’t stay lean if you take Andy Kessler’s advice-he says to you have to “Eat People” if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. What this means is you have to be willing to kill the jobs in your organization that don’t add value; you have to ‘create artificial scarcity;’ and you have to let the market decide what works and what doesn’t.

So with Americans increasingly going it alone, it’s ironic that the king of connections, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, should write a book whose title epitomizes this New Work Order: “The Start-up of You.” But as with LinkedIn, he’s on to something-even if you’re in an office dying to escape it, there’s only one person who has your best interests in mind. Go find a mirror; your best friend will be right there looking back at you, whether you’re wearing a Don Draper-gray suit, or your favorite jammies.
